About Family Foundations

The goal of Family Foundations is to promote positive co-parenting (the way that parents support each other). Research indicates that this has a strong influence on parenting and on child outcomes – and can even contribute towards improved births.

Family Foundations can be delivered alongside, or including, existing antenatal sessions. There are seven sessions in total; four are held before the birth, starting around 20-30 weeks pregnant. There are three further sessions around 3 – 6 months after baby arrives. Sessions last between 2 and 3 hours each and is delivered by two trained facilitators in a range of community venues including Childrens Centres, community centres and health and maternity settings. Both parents come to the course which helps couples to prepare for and adapt well to being parents.

Each session includes group work, presentations, couple exercises and video clips. Parents receive a workbook they can work from during the sessions and at home.

Curriculum

Prenatal Curriculum includes; BUILDING A FAMILY, FEELINGS AND CONFLICT, THE PARENTING TEAM and WORKING IT OUT
